Congressman Adam Smith’s Statement on Charlottesville, Virginia
This past weekend white supremacists rallied in Charlottesville, VA with a message of hatred, divisiveness and bigotry. Counter protesters gathered in support of unity, solidarity and inclusion of all people. Violence broke out culminating with a vehicle ramming into the crowd of counter protesters, which ended in the death of a young woman and several others being seriously injured.
Our President has failed to call out the instigators of the violence and hatred and in doing so is condoning their white nationalist message and violent acts. We must stand together as a country against bigotry and hatred. We must stand together in calling out what this is – a vile display of domestic terrorism.
Our hearts go out to Heather Heyer and her family and friends as well as the other victims of Friday’s violence. As your Congressman, I will hold President Trump accountable for his part in stoking the fires that led to this unimaginable event.
